Mesh vs Solid Pool Covers
Which cover is right for you?
Pool covers are an essential element of responsible pool ownership. Both solid and mesh pool covers get the job done when it comes to pool safety, maintenance, and hygiene. When cared for properly, both last an average of fifteen years if made with high-quality materials. However, depending on your individual needs, one may be recommended over the other. Here are the main factors to consider when choosing the type of cover for your pool.
Mesh
Mesh pool covers are generally the more affordable of the two options. They typically cost between one thousand to three thousand dollars depending on the size and shape of your pool. Mesh pool covers allow for water to flow into the pool when it rains and snows, meaning you will not need to use a cover pump to remove water that collects on top over time. However, depending on the weather, you will likely need to periodically drain water directly from the pool as the water level rises over the winter. The mesh material also means that sunlight and debris can get through the cover and into the pool leading to algae and dirt which will need to be dealt with when opening. Mesh covers are made with a lighter material than solid covers, making them much easier to clean, remove, store, and throw on your pool.
Solid
Solid pool covers are slightly more expensive than mesh. Depending on the size and shape of your pool, they typically range from fifteen hundred dollars to thirty-five hundred. Because they are completely solid, no debris, sunlight, or water can get through them, making opening your pool much simpler. This also means that water will collect on the top of the cover when it rains and snows, which will need to be removed with a cover pump to avoid bowing. Solid covers are quite heavy, and will likely require more than one person to lift.
